I am just back from Nilamboor, in Malappuram district of Kerala state, India. From there I went to Karulai, a small village some 15 kms away to do a seminar and an awareness exhibition on agro-forestry. I will write about that later.
Now, Nilamboor was made famous by Lt Henry Valentine Connolly (he was the Collector of Malabar during the British raj and was later assasinated in 1855) who created the first teak (Tectona grandis is regarded as the paragon of Indian timbers) plantation (1840s) in the whole world. Mr. Chathu Menon, a local expert also contributed to the success of this venture.
The huge teak trees are still there, becaz it is now cared as a PPP (Permanent Preservation Plot). This plantation is now known as Conolly's Plot. Dont miss this historical site which is across the great Chaliyar river.
